Spotify has over 30 million songs and is one of the largest digital / online music services available today. With so many songs available in its catalogue, it becomes very easy for one to create playlists that are put together haphazardly. This happens to a lot of Spotify users, so you are not alone. However, if you only knew about the few useful features on Spotify, you should be able to clean up and reorganize your Spotify playlists in a way that you can find the songs exactly the way you need them. Let us go over these one by one, then you will get more about how to creat Spotify playlists and how to organize spotify playlists.

Part 1. How to Create Spotify Playlists

Create and name Spotify folders

There are two ways of creating a Spotify folder, you can either go to File > New Playlist Folder and get a new playlist folder at the top of the section "Playlist". Or you can simply right click anywhere on the section "Playlist", and then select New Folder from the menu to get the new folder in place. To rename, simply click on the folder’s current name twice and overwrite it to anything you want.

Part 2.How to Organize the Spotify Playlists

Rearrange folders, playlists and tracks / songs

Now, with Spotify, you do not get an option of rearranging the folders, playlists or songs automatically in alphabetical order or anything else. Everything has to be done manually when it comes to reorganizing the items in your account. One good thing though is the very easy to use Drag and Drop features that makes your life easy. So, if you want to organize your folders, playlists or tacks, simply drag and drop them in the order of your preference.

Remove duplicate tracks from a playlist

Unfortunately, Spotify doesn't notify you in anyway if a duplicate track is being added by you inadvertently. This is a big downer in our opinion. Still, that doesn’t mean that you cannot get the duplicate tracks off your playlist. With Spotify, the best method of weeding out the duplicate songs is to first sort your playlist by using one of the column headers (artist, track or time) and then look for the similar ones and delete the ones you have found.

Add a song to a playlist

One of the best tools in Spotify is the Radio feature that allows you to discover new music. And, the great thing is that it not only allows you to listen to new songs but also add them to your playlist of you want to. If you like a song on Radio that you are listening to, simply click on its name so that you are taken to the screen with album view, and now just drag and drop the selected song to your playlist to add it. You can also do this with the songs that you have already listened to in the past, by going to the option "Play Queue" from the left hand side of the screen and then clicking on the option "History".

Categorize playlists and folders

Categorization of playlists and folders on Spotify depends very much on the individual. We have seen that Spotify users organize their playlists and folders differently, based on how and what / when they listen to it. We are going to list some of these common methods that a lot of users have adopted; feel free to use them or mix and match as you feel.

1. Categorize by Genre

It is a common one to create playlists and folders using the classification of genre. You can create folders with labels: Hip Hop, Classical, Pop Rock, Indie, Blues and and so on. You can then add specific playlists under these folders, for example, a playlist named "80s" will fit well within the folder of "Pop Rock", and "Violin" under the folder "Classical".

Here are some of the folder names that you can go with for your.

  • Alternative
  • Blues
  • Children’s Music
  • Classical
  • Country
  • Electronic
  • Folk
  • Holiday
  • Indie
  • Jazz
  • Rock
  • Pop Rock
  • Soundtrack

2. Categorize by Artist

Creating playlists for different Artists is another fun way of organizing tracks. In fact, you can add your favourite artist’s entire discography under one playlist, so that you have every one of the songs that the particular artist has ever sung.

3. Categorize by Event or Activity

Want specific songs for those long road trips you take or while you go for a run, well then that’s exactly how you should create your folders and playlists as well. You can name them like wise and enjoy the specific songs that lift up your mood while engaged in a certain activity. We have also seen users who have similar playlists but for every month, so they have one for January, February and March and so on. The good part is that you need not be worried about deleting these playlists or folders on Spotify, as you can always restore them with the help of a few clicks.
