Want to share your itunes music library among different computers, user accounts or iOS devices? Check out the following three ways to share your itunes music library.

Part 1. Share iTunes Muisc Library between Different Computers

It’s quite common now to find in most homes that there are two or possibly more computers of the desk top or laptop variety, all network connected and using the same modem and Wi-Fi connection. It is perfectly legal, in these circumstances, to share an iTunes library provided the shared files are for personal use only. Below are a list of instructions that should be followed to achieve Music Sharing, based on all devices on the network using MS Windows.

Music Sharing is a simple method of allowing fellow members of a network to share music files. A password cab be used but is not essential, especially if it is the originator of the library’s intention to share all of their music within the network users.

Step 1: Open iTunes.

Step 2: Choose Edi > Preferences.

Step 3: Click the Sharing tab. The window shown below opens.

Step 4: Select “Share my library on my local network”.

Step 5: If desired, select “Require password” and enter a password.

Step 6: Click OK.

Step 7: At this point you will see a window warning that sharing is for personal use only.

Step 8: Click on Ok to acknowledge that you accept this condition.

Step 9: On each network device, within iTunes, you will see the shared iTunes library under the “Shared” header as a yellow “house” icon incorporating a music note symbol. Anyone on the same home network should now be able to see and access your music.

Step 10: Note that if you selected "Require password" (at 5 above) you will see a lock icon. It can be unlocked by using the correct password. If you selected "Require password" without the password, all that can be seen is your library name.

Step 11: To set your library name, choose Edit > Preferences. If you don't see shared libraries, make sure you selected Shared Libraries on the General tab.

Step 12: While permission may have been granted for other people on the network to view the “host” iTunes library, it must be open in order for others to view and use the shared library and any playlists present.

Part 2. Share iTunes Muisc Library between Different User Accounts

This would be useful where you have one PC or laptop with an iTunes library that needs to be shared with other users who have access to the same device but who need to use separate login information. The first thing to do here is to quit iTunes. Then follow the instructions as shown here:

Step 1: Locate your iTunes Media folder. (This folder may be named itunes music if you created your iTunes library in iTunes 9 or earlier). Depending on your version of Windows it will be found in one of these locations:

  • Windows XP and Windows 2000: Documents and SettingsusernameMy DocumentsMy MusiciTunes
  • Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: UsersusernameMusiciTunes

Notes: The Windows version of iTunes doesn't copy all the music you add to your iTunes library to your iTunes Media folder. To copy the Music in your library to your iTunes Media Folder (if you have enough hard drive space), choose Consolidate Library from File > Library > Organise.

Step 2: The iTunes Media folder should now be dragged to a public location. Examples of public folders that can be used are:

  • Windows XP and Windows 2000: Documents and SettingsAll UsersDocumentsMy Music
  • Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: UsersPublicPublic Music

Notes: As above, the file structure can vary so the suggested locations are optional. It is important that you do NOT move the iTunes folder, the iTunes library file, or the iTunes library.xml file.

Step 3: Now open the iTunes program.

Step 4: Click on Edit > Preferences.

Step 5: Click Advanced.

Step 6: Click the Change button.

Step 7: In the Change Music Folder Location dialog, navigate to your iTunes Media folder.

Step 8: Click OK.

All of the above steps should be repeated for each user that needs to share the music library. It is possible to create duplicate songs when another user imports tracks for, for example, a CD when these tracks already exist in the library. In this case duplicates can be easily deleted

Part 3. Share iTunes Muisc Library to Any iOS Device

Let’s say, for example, that you wanted to share an itunes music library currently sitting on your PC between different iOS devices such as iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone. This is perfectly possible and all you have to do is follow a few simple instructions. In fact, with a good home Wi-Fi system you can stream the entire contents of your library to another device without any wire connections.

Home Sharing has to be set up on your PC first of all, and you should note that iTunes version 10.2 or later is required if successful streaming of the library is to be achieved. The latest is iTunes version 11 so these instructions assume that this latest version is in place on the host PC.

Step 1: Open iTunes on the PC.

Step 2: Choose File > Home Sharing > Turn on Home Sharing.

Step 3: Enter the apple id and password that is normally used to access the iTunes Store, then click Create Home Share. The same Apple ID is required for both PC and iOS device.

Once Home Sharing is set up on the PC, you need to set it up on another device. The following instructions relate to setting up music sharing on the iPhone5.

  1. Tap Settings > Music
  2. In the Home Sharing section, enter the same apple id and password you entered on your computer (or computers) and tap the return button

You can then, for example, play the home sharing music content on your iPhone as follows:

  1. Tap Music > More... > Shared.
  2. Select a shared library.

If all is set up correctly. the shared music library can be accessed and selected tracks or albums will play as normal.
